I found

(%i1) %beta[1];
(%o1) %beta[1]  <-- greek symbol, subscripted
(%i2) %beta[1]:42;
(%o2) 42
(%i3) %beta[1];
(%o3) 42
(%i4) '(%beta[1]); <-- quote the whole expression
(%o4) %beta[1] <-- greek symbol, subscripted
