I think this has been fixed a short while ago by Andreas, who rolled back a
recent change that caused an error when (among other things) a matrix was
displayed with its columns broken up and marked with Col n =.

In that case, the problem is probably in the display code, not the matrix
calculation code. Does string(aa.aa) give the correct result? I'll let
someone else follow up on this, because this pretty clearly seems to be a
bug in the display code, which I haven't touched and have no particular
expertise in.
