Hi Charles,
I would also like a readily accessible list of functions known to Maxima.
Hunting around the installed folders of Maxima 5.12 I found and printed out
the text file "builtins-list.txt". On my windows xp computer, this file is
in: c:\Program Files\Maxima-5.12.0\share\maxima\5.12.0\share\
This is a very long list in alphabetical order. A few of the entries are
recognised only if a package is loaded in. There is no edit date on the
file, and no version number.
At least this helps me avoid choosing a function name which Maxima already
uses..

you have Maxima list all available functions - i.e. those that are
built-in, those that are loaded from a package, and those I define. The
"functions" command handles the latter only, apparently."
