It turns out the problem is that $ERF applied to a numerical argument
does not yield a number (while %ERF applied to a number does yield
a number). For other functions such as sin, cos, exp, gamma, and
probably others, the verb form applied to a number yields a number.
I'm pretty sure erf should also. Not sure what bit of code needs to be
touched to make that happen.
