This must be a remnant of the older, and obsolete, use of the
noun/verb scheme to control numerical evaluation. There is no reason
for erf (or for that matter sin, gamma, etc.) to have distinct noun
and verb forms. (Who is generating $erf, anyway? I don't get that on
5.12.0.)

The only functions which need distinct noun and verb forms are those
which may either change the form of the argument or represent a
concept, e.g. diff, integrate, at, etc.
