I'll try to do so - as far as I can. Let's take SBCL:
The FreeBSD SBCL "port" downloads a binary called
sbcl-1.0.6-x86-64-freebsd-binary.tar.bz2
from sbcl.sf.net and the source-tarball for sbcl 1.0.9 . The
binaries are used to bootstrap the build of sbcl-1.0.9 .
Afterwards maxima was built with sbcl-1.0.9 .
So this is what I did, but how can I find out if it uses 64-bit
instructions?
