I suppose a version of that 8-line Mathematica program can be written in
Maxima;
All you need is a simple rootfinder (FindRoot in Mathematica; presumably has
an equivalent in Maxima).
To make it entirely equivalent to Mathematica's program, the rootfinder
would have to work in arbitrary precision (which should not be a problem,
but depends on how it was written).

(I tried cutting/pasting the Mma program, but it was gibberish)
