Indeed, my version 4.0 of windows gnuplot (wgnuplot.exe) also
triggers an error message.

My present working method to convert a Maxima plot display
to a jpeg is to right click the small
gnuplot graph icon in the upper left corner of the plot
window, select Options, Copy to Clipboard.
Then open a picture editor, like the freely available
Infanview [ http://www.irfanview.com/ ], choose Edit, Paste
from the Infanview menu.
The figure should now be displayed inside Infanview.
Choose File, Save As from the Infanview menu.
Choose the desired directory, and type in a name
like "k131.jpg", and choose Save.
