Peter, I wonder what you mean by a unified index.
There is an index in the Texinfo output (both in the .info output
and the html output). The describe function in Maxima
(invoked via ? and ??) searches the index.
? foo
is an exact search.
?? foo
is a substring search.
Also I am working on a documentation category system,
similar to category tags in some wiki systems.
