Besides the known interfaces, others have told you before, i
remember 'kayali' (you'll find it on sourceforge): a new one, qt-based
interface, started not long ago.
Another task you could consider is improving the interface between Maxima
and LyX (http://lyx.org). Lyx is the only graphical interface to Latex (as
far as i know). Currently single commands can be piped from lyx to maxima,
returning result to the editor. Extending that capability woudl be very
useful and appreciated, since most lyx users are involved in matters
related to mathematics, of course.
