I appreciate your patience, Robert. When I create the file with this line:
maxima_tempdir:"$HOME/.maxima/tmp"
or this line:
maxima_tempdir:"/tmp"
Then Maxima errs and is unusable:
Maxima encountered a Lisp error:
End of file while scanning expression
Automatically continuing.
To reenable the Lisp debugger set *debugger-hook* to nil.
Error in MACSYMA-TOP-LEVEL [or a callee]: The tag RETURN-FROM-DEBUGGER
is undefined.
Fast links are on: do (use-fast-links nil) for debugging
Broken at MREAD-RAW. Type :H for Help.

3 Maxima top-level
4 (Abort) Return to top level.
What is the format of the line supposed to be? I've been googling for
examples and I cannot find any. Other than the doc page at
sourceforge, where can one find information? I'm sorry to be a pain,
and I did STFW, but I cannot find any examples.
In general, I feel that there is not a lot of information about Maxima
on the web. I will compile all that I learn and publish it at
dotancohen.com my personal site.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
