geometric series

In Maxima, if one enters sum((1+r)^-t,t,1,n), the result is given as the
Summation sign 1/(r+1)^t correctly. BUT how does one obtain the closed form
solution to such series? In Mathematica for example it automatically prints
the equivalent of (1-(1+r)^-n)/r.
I cannot find anything searching for "series" or "geometric series" that
seems to cover this but it seems quite a basic question so I apologise if
the answer is obvious.
