Sure we all can speculate, but I guess our answers aren't too useful
then ...
My first guess is, that this problem is pretty much unrelated to
maxima. Something like clisp getting a segault or an illegal
instruction signal or something similiar.

As you seem to have trouble getting a minimal example, my second guess
is, that you just run out of memory in one way or the other. (Sorry
don't know what clisp does in this case). Perhaps you get bitten by
the oom killer?
