I think the way to start this is to look at all the programs that already do
this, and see if you can modify them to your own taste.
Maybe symmax, imaxima, emaxima, texmacs, kayala, SAGE.

and sells for $35.00. Your mention was the first time I have heard of it.
If you like it, maybe you can just hook it up to maxima, and save yourself
a lot of time.
Mathcad also has a computer algebra system (currently Mupad.) If you really
like that,
maybe that can be hooked up to maxima.
There is also scientific workplace, hooked up to mupad at the moment.
