I am in a similar position.
I've been using R for a while and recently started learning Maxima in order
to do some symbolic calculation.
There is an interesting paper from Richard Fateman (Manipulation of Matrices
Symbolically) that was very helpful for me to start using symbolic matrices
in Maxima.
For non-symbolic needs, stick with R, in my view.
