I use XMaxima almost exclusively on
my windows xp box, and don't
recognise the problem you describe.
My first action is to get rid of the
split window (alt-o, escape, enter)
so there is no competition with
the "main window".
I have two sets of XMaxima usage
tips in my Maxima by Example
notes (so far): Ch. 1, Sec. 1.2,
and Ch. 5, Sec. 5.19.2
