Subject: Adding characters as valid variable characters

A few months ago I remember running across something in the Maxima
documentation about how to add special characters as valid characters
for variable names. However, over the past couple of days I've been
looking all over for this in the documentation again, but I haven't been
able to find it. For example, I want to make it so that it is valid to
begin maxima variable names with dollar signs. ($foo). Do you happen to
know how to do this?
