Maxima restarted

Hi,

(I just subscribed, but the confirm email has not yet come through)

I see a problem that several people have seen. There is a little buzz
on the web, but no clues that I could find. I grepped the listserv
archives back to 2005 with no luck.

When starting maxima in a terminal, I used to get the banner
with the version etc. (I dont remember precisely what).

At some point there was a crash of some sort. Now whenever I
start maxima, instead of the banner, I get:

lapeyre> maxima
Maxima restarted.
(%i1)

Furthermore, emacs-style command line editing used to work, but it
stopped working when this weird behavior started. I have tried a few
things, but I always get this broken behavior. I tried

 1. running maxima as a different user.
 2. uninstalling all maxima packages and reinstalling.
 3. searching (but not finding) user's .maxima files
 4. searching in /var for stuff written by maxima
 5. rebooting.

System info:
x86 architecture
kernel 2.6.23.9
debian unstable

I wonder if anyone has a clue as to what is going on here?

Thanks,
John
