Well, an easy thing to do is to change the title of the manual
from "Maxima Manual" to "Maxima 5.xx.yy Manual".
The title is assigned in maxima.texi by @settitle.
In my local sandbox I changed @settitle Maxima Manual
to @settitle Maxima @VERSION@ Manual and renamed
maxima.texi to maxima.texi.in, and put maxima.texi on the
list of files to generate in configure.in. These changes have the
desired effect of causing Maxima 5.xx.yy Manual to be pasted into
the html output. I'll commit these changes unless someone can talk
me out of it.
