Well, the code to handle Maxima strings as Lisp strings has been

It seems possible that there is an out of date copy of stringproc.lisp
somewhere in your system.
What does file_search("stringproc.lisp") return?
Does "locate stringproc.lisp" at the command prompt show the
presence of more than one stringproc.lisp?
Given that stringproc.lisp hasn't changed since 5.17.1,
I think downloading from CVS won't help, unfortunately.
