Turns out actually it was sublist which was changed.
I think I know how to recover the previous behavior.
I'll commit a patch for sublist, and put some examples
in the test suite to try to ensure it isn't accidentally changed
again. The patch can go into 5.19.2 which I was planning
to make this weekend to roll out some other bug fixes.
