Maxima and Ubuntu packages?

Amongst the manifold reasons, the most obvious is: we can't. Ubuntu distributes
Maxima from its repositories. We have (and cannot have, due to Maxima's GPL) no
say in this matter.

I don't think the issue in the Ubuntu+Debian bug reports is the underlying
lisp.

After looking at the bug reports, it seems the problem is not so much that
gcl is used, but that the gcl build is incompatible with Ubuntu's default
kernel configuration. The fact that this problem and many other bugs are
outstanding against the Debian and Ubuntu Maxima packages suggests that
the package is effectively orphaned--or at least badly neglected.
I've written the package manager and offered my assistance.

I build maxima from source with clisp, cmucl and gcl on debian lenny,
without any problems.
