Nick,
Please tell us how you installed your Maxima, and which version it is
(the function build_info reports this in Maxima). I'm going to guess 
you've installed Maxima 5.17.1 from an Ubuntu or Debian repository.
In which case, there is nothing special about #298, rather that build
with GCL is buggy and has many outstanding bug reports against it.

I suggest you install a newer version of Maxima (v5.20.* is current).
I think that you can find .deb packages in the Ubuntu repository. See
some recent discussions on this list for more information.
