Thank you for all your replies,
Let me summarise shortly. Did I miss any frontend ?
I tried to try all the frontends that I'm aware of:
- wxmaxima, without TeX rendering ;) I'm using it right now.
- texmacs, uses TeX rendering, is very bloated and crashes
every 5 minutes (debian squeeze, clean install). Also it seems to
be very emacs-centered, and I dislike emacs. So I trash texmacs in
favour of other options.
- imaxima - I am unable to find debian package. I'd like to try imaxima,
but I prefer to avoid installing by hand without a debian package
from http://sites.google.com/site/imaximaimath/download-and-install
- cantor (from kde-edu) - now, that is weird. The KDE website says
that cantor is in kde-edu. But when I look at this package in
debian repository I cannot find cantor in it. Am I blind?
Does someone here use cantor on debian (ubuntu?) to tell what's going on?
- euler - also I'm unable to find the debian package on
http://eumat.sourceforge.net/download.html
- lyx+maxima - this one seems promising. I'm quite experienced with
latex, and never used lyx. I'm fine with lyx since it's just a
latex frontend, and in fact I am looking for maxima frontend. So
having two frontends in single one cannot hurt. I'll investigate more.
Did I miss any frontend ?
Do you have some suggestions about how to try imaxima, cantor & euler?
I guess that after 5 hours of downloading and compiling I could get
them all to run, but currently I cannot afford so much time. So if
you know that there is a package lying somewhere, or something that
could help me to do it faster, I'd be more than happy to try them
again.
