I didn't have special functions especially :-) in mind.
There is a huge amount of numerical functionality from
integration to optimization, which seems a wast to either
re-invent for, or deny to, maxima. The Common Lisp
interface is said to work with (at least) SBCL, which is in
fairly wide use, I believe.
