What frontend are you using? WxMaxima? If you're using maxima from
emacs and with a UTF-capable lisp, life's simple: use ? as your variable
name... This isn't the same as %gamma, which is a six-character string.
The way WxMaxima works is to translate %greekletter to the corresponding
letter on display. Obviously, then the only way to get a gamma symbol is
to use %gamma, which is bound, as you say.
Of course, %Gamma isn't (although I suppose it'll look like ?, which
probably isn't what you're after). Or you could use a different variable
name?
