Turns out that I don't really need tr, which may not work as I wanted on
Windows anyway. (I wanted to convert newlines to a space, but I changed
the implementation to append a \ instead, which works.)
Anyway, I've checked in the changes. If someone who has windows could
test this out for me, that would be great.
