Can't set linel to large value?

Hi,

We are trying to generate files with very large line lengths and so,
at some point, we set linel to 10001, and then print using redirected
ouput. However, we get this error:

> linel : 10001;
assignment: cannot assign 10001 to linel

Does anyone have any idea why this is? Is there any way we can prevent
this? Is is something at the lisp level?
