Universl read_data function

Hi Ted:

I forgot that I added some more lines to ndata1.dat by copy/paste and
yes, it does have some blank lines between the data lines. When I was
running the tests, I wanted to add some additional data from your data
files, but I changed my mind and decided to use different files instead.
I didn't get the file returned to its original state before I sent it
off to you.

When I remove the extra lines I added and leave the CR/LF combinations,
including the trailing blank lines, the edited version of read_data
operates correctly with "read_data ("/home/pfb/ndata1.dat"," ",true,[4]);"
