I haven't really followed this topic in detail,
but for the record, I think that there should be a
consistent default, either real or complex (which, I hope,
is superseded by explicit declarations to the contrary).
I could go either way, but given the history of Maxima
and its current behavior, I am leaning towards assuming real
as the default.
