Possible Problem with the Unit_Step Function

I have the current version of Maxima with the WxMaxima GUI on Mac OS 10.7 and have a problem with the unit_step function. When I invoke the function for plotting I get a vertical line, instead of a horizontal line of unit amplitude. Numerical evaluation of the argument of the function doesn't give the expected result also. This behavior occurs whether or not the package orthpoly has been loaded or not. Earlier versions of Maxima have not displayed this behavior. Thanks.
