Shift-Enter should do it, assuming you're on a recent wxMaxima (you
didn't specify a version).
One quick thing to look for is whether wxMaxima is indicating (in the
status bar) that it is connected to Maxima and ready to do
calculations. If that doesn't come up after a reasonable wait, then
more information will be useful:
1) The versions of wxMaxima and Maxima you're using. Also where you
got them: e.g. were they the official binaries from Sourceforge or
via some other method.
2) The version of OS X you're using.
3) Also, you can run the Console application (from
/Applications/Utilities) just before starting wxMaxima and see if any
error messages come up.
