Well, I don't know which email client you use, but it is pretty standard
that most clients support some sort of threading, i.e. grouping messages
that are related. This feature may be disabled by default (some do not
like it).

However, if your email client does not support this, gmane's webpage
certainly does.

You can do that here:
http://maxima.sourceforge.net/maximalist.html
and the archive here:
http://www.math.utexas.edu/pipermail/maxima/
lets you search the list's archive by topic, author, etc.

By this, I guess you mean that you can enter (La)TeX and it will be
typeset by your web-browser correctly?

This is a good point. Here is a Greasemonkey script that enables LaTeX
support in your firefox browser:

http://pastebin.com/EZ877j8G

If you follow the installation instructions, you should be able to see
the following rendered correctly in your browser:

$\pi \cong 3.14159 \ldots$.
