One can also install rpm's (to download from Sourceforge file manager:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/maxima/files) via 'alien' on Ubuntu.

By the way, is it necessary to install Lisp in addition to Maxima? I
thought that binary packages did not require a separate Lisp
installation. (Lisp is certainly needed if one rebuilds from source.)
