I am the maintainer of maxima in Gentoo.

The problem is: maxima can be compiled by many different lisps (depending
on USE flags), and reasonably new versions of these lisps are in unstable.
Stabilizing any new version of maxima would, probably, require to produce
a new ebuild, from which quite a number of lisp options (USE flags) are
excluded. Not nice.

And I don't know why I should do it. Why not just use lisps and maxima
from ~arch? Even better, you should do layman -a lisp, and use lisps from
the lisp overlay.
