you create /builddir as superuser and set the permissions so user johnny
can write it.
I don't know how the packages installed by yum were created. Another
possibility is to install Maxima using the rpm's posted to the SF file
manager. http://sourceforge.net/projects/maxima/files
They were created without reference to Quicklisp or SBCL.
It is pretty straightforward to rebuild Maxima on a Linux system. You
can get src.rpm and tar.gz from the SF file manager.
