F:
I essentially use Maxima as a general purpose programming language -
mostly in the fields of mathematics and mathematical modeling. The
features I appreciate most are: functional programming, list
processing, symbolic computation, exact numerics (within what is
reasonably possible) and graphics features. For my purposes Maxima is
an excellent free software package. It is available on many
platforms. In particular when working with students, I see many good
reasons for using Maxima. And the implementation of the wxMaxima user
interface was a quantum leap as far as general usability (in
particular for non-experts) is concerned.
