Assuming GNU make everywhere?

Yes, but I don't know how to get autoconf to generate the necessary stuff
that automake wants to have.  Well, I did do the sharefiles.mk.in stuff,
but I think that's more complicated than it ought to be, and, while not a
failure, not a great success either.
