You are absolutely right! In my own personal experience, the biggest
source of trouble was GCL. Yesterday I downloaded (from sbcl.org) a
precompiled Windows version of SBCL which is supposed to work in 32bit
and 64bit processors. I hope I have some free time soon to try to build
Maxima 5.30 with it.
