I don't know where the system search box is in Windows 8, but in earlier
versions, the Start button will let you search for 'maxima'.
On my system, under Windows Vista, I run
/Program Files (x86)/Maxima-5.28.0-2/bin/maxima.bat
I assume it's something similar in Windows 8.
