As for maxima-5.9 (cvs of today) + gcl-2.4.0 or clisp-2.27, it is
not fixed:

with clisp, I get:

*** - argument to 1+ should be a number: |$a|


with gcl, the previous:

Error: |$a| is not of type NUMBER.
Fast links are on: do (si::use-fast-links nil) for debugging
Error signalled by MACSYMA-TOP-LEVEL.
Broken at MACSYMA-TOP-LEVEL.  Type :H for Help.
