Dear Jim,

Yes, the string MAXIMA_USERDIR is present twice in the file maxima
of c:\maxima\maxima\bin, but the presence or abscence of this file in the
bin directory of Maxima makes no difference to the startup times as I have
checked and this is completely reasonable and expected.

The influence should be due to another file such as those mentioned by
Cliff.

(Incidentally, could you, please, consider renaming TCL files with the
extension TCL, e.g. XMAXIMA.TCL instead of XMAXIMA as has
been the case in the past? Otherwise, I have to do this myself when using
Freewrap.)

I do not know whether the maxima file has been included in the xmaxima.exe
file (together with the xmaxima file), but I feel not (being not sure of
course).
In fact, I do not know to which executable file the maxima file (in bin) has
been included, but it should have been included in some executable file
there.
In which executable file?

Mike can surely help on this question. A reply by Mike will be very welcome.

Because of lack of experience, I cannot help, but I am sure that you will
find out the definitive solution very soon with the help of Cliff and Mike.

Incidentally, having returned to the original autoexec.bat file, etc., the
computer required few efforts (even after it has been turned off and on)
to return to its original situation (with delays) in starting maxima. (At
the first few tests, no delays. Very strange!) This is strange after shut
down
and restart.

Maybe some Windows .ini file (I do not know) is influenced from the
installation of maxima. (I have also observed that the Maxima requires
more time to start in the first time after the computer is turned on.)

Many, many thanks again and best regards,

Nikos
