Not that I know of.
I just tried it here, with Emacs 21.2, and I didn't have any
problems. Since maxima.el and maxima-font-lock.el don't use
comint-last-input-start explicitly, they must call something that
uses it, but I don't know what.

Yes. Are you using the .el files from the latest CVS
maxima/interfaces/emacs/emaxima, or from the 5.9.0? (There is a
slight difference.) Or another version?
How are you calling maxima-send-buffer? (C-cC-b, M-x
maxima-send-buffer, or using the menu, for example.)
Do you always have this problem, or only for certain maxima buffers?
If the latter, could you send a small *.max file for which you have
the problem?
