I agree. IMHO the current 2D output in Maxima has two main problems:
1. It's ugly.
2. It's not editable. I.e. not suitable for selecting subexpressions
and feeding them back to Maxima.
Using TeX can solve problem 1 -- it's hard to beat the quality of TeX
for mathematical typesetting.
But I don't think that an approach involving TeX can ever be part of a
solution to problem 2.
