Wait! Stop! Hold on! Cease and desist! (That's all the exclamations I
can think of off the top of my head.)
This thread has veered wildly off track. Maxima is currently able to
talk to gnuplot. Talking to gnuplot in this way is consistent with the
licenses of both gnuplot and Maxima. We are not going to remove this
capability from Maxima.
We do plan to improve the plotting capabilities of Maxima some time
after we've fixed the many currently known bugs. At that time, we can
discuss various possible approaches to doing so. If we were to decide
that somehow directly linking the C code of gnuplot into Maxima was the
best way to go, then we would have a licensing problem. I doubt it will
ever come to that.

P.S. It isn't that I object to idle conversation. It's just that
sometimes casual readers off the list become alarmed by perceived new
directions for Maxima development, when really nothing is changing. I
would like to avoid causing such alarm.
