You might also look at PARI-GP, a free (GPL) system for
algebra; I think it might have greater capability for
number theory problems than Maxima. You can find it on
the web by searching for the name.
Since PARI-GP is GPL'd, Maxima could borrow functions
as need be. Something to consider.
