Well, Octave is actually quite a simple language. There is a
reference manual at: http://www.octave.org/doc/octave_toc.html
The parts of interest to you will probably be sections 3--11.
Looking at the manual, it does cover everything, but perhaps
too tersely -- all the interesting stuff about indexing is
covered by something like "an index can be a number, range,
numerical or logical vector".
R is a rather richer language (and system). See the "R language
definition" at: http://cran.us.r-project.org/manuals.html
I use both Octave and R all the time. They are both great.
