This is a nice plotting library. IMHO ,this library is much more powerfull
than gnuplot (and it has GPL license).
The plplot has api interface to c/c++, fortran,octave, perl,python, yorick and
tk/tcl.
The last thing could be used within xmaxima, though i'm not sure
