Assuming that there are no seroius underlying issues, you will have to
add maxima to /etc/portage/package.unmask. Something like this:
=app-sci/maxima-5.9.0-r2
I think you will also need to add
=app-sci/maxima-5.9.0-r2 ~amd64
to /etc/portage/package.keywords.
One last thing. The ebuilds greater than 5.9.0 allow you to select which
clisp you want to use with maxima. I would recommend "gcl" so add
-cmucl gcl
to you USE variable in /etc/make.conf.
