There is at least two packages which produce MathML output
in Maxima directly without any intermediate Latex stage.
One is part of Maxima source share/contrib/maximaMathML
and another can be found at http://www.lurklurk.org/maxima.html
Making Maxima GUI of Mozilla is not hard task - XUL is
powerfull and portable.
One can even make 2-d input expression editor using
sample implementation
